Urban Economics: Insights for Resilient and Inclusive Cities
African cities are growing rapidly, reshaping the continent’s economic landscape and presenting both opportunities and challenges for inclusive development. At GM First Strategy, our Urban Economics work explores how urbanization, infrastructure, and spatial policy influence economic activity, labor markets, and structural transformation in African cities.
We use data, geospatial analysis, and policy research to help governments, development partners, and urban planners design cities that are economically vibrant, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
Our Areas of Focus:
Structural Transformation and Urban Labor Markets
We analyze how cities facilitate the shift from low-productivity sectors (e.g., subsistence agriculture, informal trade) to higher-productivity activities in manufacturing and services. Our work identifies the barriers and enablers of productive urban employment, especially for youth and women.
Spatial Distribution of Economic Activity
Using spatial data and urban analytics, we map the location and density of businesses, markets, and informal sectors. This informs urban planning and investment strategies that improve accessibility, reduce congestion, and foster economic clustering.
Informality and Urban Livelihoods
We examine the role of the informal economy in urban livelihoods and its intersection with policy, land use, and infrastructure. Our research supports the design of urban policies that protect livelihoods while promoting formalization and productivity.
Infrastructure, Mobility, and Connectivity
We explore how transport, housing, and digital infrastructure shape urban economic opportunity. Our advisory supports investment planning and infrastructure development that enhances spatial equity and economic integration.
Urban Resilience and Climate Risk
Our urban economics work integrates climate vulnerability assessments to help cities plan for heat stress, flooding, and other urban climate risks—ensuring that economic planning is future-proof and climate-responsive.
